Residential electricity accounts for just over a quarter of global demand, and that share has barely budged in recent years. According to the latest IEA data, households made up 27% of electricity use, almost identical to their 28% share in 2020. The other 73% comes from non-residential sectors, dominated by industry (42%) and commercial uses (20%), with smaller shares from agriculture (4%), transport (2%), and other uses (5%).
So far, the sectoral balance of global electricity use has held steady. The question now is how the landscape will shift as demand from AI and data centers rapidly accelerates in the coming years, particularly in emerging markets.
