The Issue
Geothermal technology has been deployed at scale in only a few emerging markets, such as Kenya and Indonesia where geology is especially favorable. The potential remains largely untapped in many of the fastest-growing economies where future energy demand will be greatest.
Relevance
As one of the few options for clean, firm power generation, geothermal is a potential driver of low-carbon economic growth. Advanced geothermal — new drilling technologies that could enable“geothermal anywhere” — would vastly expand the set of countries able to exploit it.
Our Approach
The Hub seeks to understand the scope for expanding traditional geothermal to new locations as well as the potential for new geothermal techniques in emerging markets.
